Combining the Best of Two Worlds: when IT Security Research Meets Industry
The implementation of information security concepts in operational deployments represents a challenge for companies offering IT security solutions. Beyond secure software and hardware developments, it requires a continuous adaptation to privacy regulations as well as new threats such as quantum computing.
This talk provides an industry perspective into IT security research related to secure storage of sensitive data and authentication mechanisms. It is intended to spark interest on current security-related challenges in industry and create awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. Examples of research and development activities at the German IT security company secunet Security Networks will be presented and discussed.
The company which is headquartered in Essen has over 700 employees distributed among 11 sites in Germany and generated consolidated net income of 35.0 million euros in 2020. The company is involved in numerous research projects together with academic partners which foster knowledge transfer for applied science. The talk is intended to provide an exemplary introduction to important aspects of industrial requirements in the area of IT security research such as Manipulation Detection, Privacy Protection, Border Control, and Biometric Systems.
Ponente: Dr. Christian Rathgeb is a Professor with the Faculty of Computer Science, Hochschule Darmstadt (HDA), Germany. He is a Principal Investigator in the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE. His research includes pattern recognition, iris and face recognition, security aspects of biometric systems, secure process design and privacy enhancing technologies for biometric systems. He is a Senior Consultant at secunet Security Networks AG in the Division of Homeland Security.
